OMA, in collaboration with LOLA Landscapes and FABRICations, is responsible for the master plan of Bajeskwartier. This plan sketches the appearance of the entire district and ensures unity in diversity. It draws inspiration from the history of the area, with the highest sustainability ambitions in mind. The development of Bajeskwartier is driven by ambitions relating to nature-inclusive construction, healthy urban living, circularity, CO2 storage and energy efficiency. Fragments saved from the original Bijlmerbajes prison, such as the main building and the Groene Toren, will soon be standing alongside new buildings. Materials from the former prison are being recycled and reused in the new buildings. That’s how Bajeskwartier pays homage to the unique history of the site in creating a district of the future.
Unique but interconnected
The buildings on the site are organized in four districts, each with its own unique identity. The layout of the original prison has been kept in the urban design, with a long street bordered by the towers. Where the former prison towers once stood will be splendid modern buildings in amongst numerous gardens. OMA has designed four iconic buildings for the Amstel District: The Stern, The Jay, The Cardinal and The Ruby.
